Hello! My name is Bob, and I know how to spell “saison”. That’s the only prerequisite to being allowed to write the August edition of the Amory’s Tomb Newsletter! Here’s what’s going on between when now and the end of the month, listed in reverse-chronological order:
AT Pouring at the Punk In Drublic Festival August 31 and September 1
NOFX, the punk band, is taking one last tour around the country with their Punk in Drublic Festival, and one of their stops is in Brockton on the last weekend of the month. These are the last concerts NOFX will ever perform, and to celebrate their career they are bringing a whole slew of similarly venerable punk bands to perform over the 2 day period.
Why is this leading a brewery newsletter? Well, let me quote directly from the Punk in Drublic website, “COME THIRSTY! Attendees 21+ get to start the party off with an epic beer festival featuring local and regional breweries will take place from Noon - 3PM.”
That’s right! Amory’s Tomb is one of the breweries chosen to pour at the festival itself! Starting a punk festival with a 3 hour beer tasting? What could possibly go wrong? I can’t even imagine how much Man Bun Pilsner they will go through. Sounds like a lot of fun!
Assabet Craft Beer & Food Festival August 31
What if you don’t feel like taking a ride down to Brockton and/or don’t feel like listening to punk rock for 10 hours? The 3rd Annual Assabet Craft Beer & Food Festival will also be on August 31st from 12:00 - 4:00pm. And Amory’s Tomb will be pouring at that festival too!
It’s at the First Parish Church in Stow right on Route 117. Not to make assumptions about Punk in Drublic, but I am guessing that, in addition to being closer to Maynard, this event will be significantly more family-friendly than the punk festival. Just a hunch!
With AT crews pouring at both events on August 31, who’s going to be monitoring the Beer Garden??? Maybe the taps will be completely unguarded! Can Amory’s Tomb be in 3 places at the same time? We’ll see on August 31st!
Beer Garden Punk Takeover August 30
How can Amory’s Tomb improve on the near-perfect Taco Fridays? By having a Punk Takeover Taco Friday, that’s how!
To celebrate Punk in Drublic weekend, SL,UT Punks and Amory’s Tomb is throwing a “Punk Takeover” in the Beer Garden on Friday, August 30th! I asked Allen what this meant, and his response was that they’d be playing punk music.
Well, of course we know that, but personally I am hoping there will be more. Perhaps Allen and Rick will be wearing their best Doc Martens.
How about spiked hair or a mohawk? (Rick can do this one.) Or if they want to go even older-than-NOFX-old school, maybe a safety pin through the nose?
Do you think they’ll move the picnic tables out of the way so there’s ample room for a mosh pit? The mind boggles at the possibilities for Punk Takeover in the Beer Garden!
August Art & Vendor Market on the 24th
On the weekend before all the punk nonsense, Amory’s Tomb will be hosting the significantly more relaxed-sounding Art & Vendor Market in the Beer Garden. This is a great way to casually look at some local artisans’ work while sipping on your favorite farmhouse ales.
Featuring delicious treats from our friends at Perico’s and Ben’s Raclette, artwork from Micah Bridges and Bananamasher, functional crafts from Kelley MacGlashing, a meet and greet with our new neighbors Sutra Studio, live music and more!
Space is limited! If you are interested in participating as a vendor, please send us an email at info@amorystomb.com. More information is also available on our website.
Raclette Thursdays!
Ben’s Raclette has been a periodic popup in the Beer Garden for all of 2024, even in January. If you are unfamiliar with Ben’s Raclette, it starts with a half-wheel of French cheese. Ben melts the cut end, then scrapes the gooey cheese onto a fresh baguette. Yum! You can also usually get it with prosciutto and jam, or honey and lavender. Double Yum!
Starting August 22nd and running throughout the fall, Ben’s Raclette is going to be at the Beer Garden every Thursday! That melted cheese tastes good now, but take it from someone who enjoyed Ben’s Raclette in the Beer Garden in winter, it is going to taste even better in September and October when there is a little chill in the air.
Raclette pairs really well with Allen and Rick’s farmhouse ales. My favorite combination is a bottle of “A Quiet Place for Weavers” and a the raclette with prosciutto and jam. I seriously doubt there is another beer garden in the entire state of Massachusetts where you could get anything similar! So good!
Mysterious New IPA is Out Now!
A brand new IPA is also being released in the Beer Garden this week! It’s called “Modulated Frequencies”! I asked Allen what the deal was with this beer, and he said he didn’t want to talk about IPAs. That said, here are a few details to tempt your taste buds: Modulated Frequencies is a Vermont-style India Pale Ale, made from floor-malted pale, wheat and munich malts from Blue Ox Malthouse, and Organic Flaked Oats from Aurora Mills & Farm. Brewed with Québec-grown Mackinac hops and ZA African Queen. Drinkers can expect notes of berries, dank, tropical fruit and spice.
Well, look, most of us are visiting the beer garden to enjoy farmhouse ales and (obviously!) Man Bun Pilsner. But I enjoy a good IPA, too. After all, IPAs go great with spicy food…like tacos!
Whether they care about them or not, Allen and Rick have made some mighty fine IPAs over the years. Here are 5 different IPAs Amory’s Tomb has brewed in the past:
“Shirtless Wonder”
“Jazz Records at the Roosevelt”
“Geek Rays”
“Stranded for a Moment”
“Scally Caps”
I swear these are real names! Do you remember all of these? I sure don’t!
The point is, Allen and Rick brew a lot of one-off IPAs, and Modulated Frequencies is the latest one. It’s draft (or “draught” - see the next item) only in the Beer Garden so be sure to get one before it’s gone!
Draught vs. Draft Survey Results: 0 - 0
Last month’s newsletter asked a vital question: “Is it spelled d-r-a-u-g-h-t or d-r-a-f-t?”
In case you missed it, I encourage you to search through your inbox (or spam folder?) to read the highly enlightening discourse.
To summarize, Allen thinks it’s spelled “draught” and I think it is spelled “draft”. But rather than just simply dismiss the pretentious use of the letters “ugh” when a perfectly good “f” would do and declare me the winner, we decided to include a reader pool in last month’s email.
Well, the results are in and it’s 0 votes for “draught” and 0 votes for “draft”. It turns out the survey button didn’t work! Oops! And we were so proud of ourselves for having no spelling errors last month!
Allen did say that he received 2 emails and 1 text back in favor of his “draught” position versus receiving no comments for my “draft”. But of course the only people responding to Allen were going to agree with him. He’s making our beer! We need to humor (or is it humour?) him and keep him happy!
Anyway, here’s a survey button that we think works:
Well that’s about it! September is going to bring cooler temperatures, Broken Latch, Golden Rule and the as-yet-unnamed Pink Boots Society farmhouse ale. Should be a great month. Until then, see you in the Taco Mosh Pit!
